FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HIV/AIDS

  1. There is a difference between HIV and AIDS. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS is the result of an HIV infection.
  2. HIV infection may be prevented.
  3. You can't get HIV through everyday contact. You can't shake a person’s hand and get HIV. You can't get HIV from using the toilet behind someone else who may be HIV positive. You can't get HIV from hugging a person who is HIV positive.
  4. When you give blood, you cannot get HIV.
  5. Just because there are no visible lesions or signs on a person’s body doesn't mean that person isn't HIV positive.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOW HIV IS SPREAD

  1. Yes – you can get HIV from having oral sex with an infected person. Why? Because body fluids are exchanged in the process of oral sex.
  2. Just because you have anal sex with someone doesn't mean you are reducing your risk of contracting the HIV virus. If the person is not wearing a latex condom, you can still contract the HIV virus.
