|
YOU ARE AT RISK OF CONTRACTING THE HIV VIRUS AND AIDS IF YOU:
- Have vaginal, anal or oral sex when your partner isn't wearing a condom.
- Use oil-based lubricants such as hand creams, massage oils or Vaseline when you are having vaginal or anal sex.
- Have oral sex with a man multiple times but don't make him change the condom each time.
- Have oral sex with a woman multiple times but don't make her change the latex barrier each time.
- Use inhalants and injecting drugs such as “poppers” and then have sex with a man or woman without wearing a latex protective barrier or condom.
- Share needles to inject drugs, steroids or vitamins.
FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HIV/AIDS
- There is a difference between HIV and AIDS. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS is the result of an HIV infection.
- HIV infection may be prevented.
- You can't get HIV through everyday contact. You can't shake a person’s hand and get HIV. You can't get HIV from using the toilet behind someone else who may be HIV positive. You can't get HIV from hugging a person who is HIV positive.
- When you give blood, you cannot get HIV.
- Just because there are no visible lesions or signs on a person’s body doesn't mean that person isn't HIV positive.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOW HIV IS SPREAD
- Yes – you can get HIV from having oral sex with an infected person. Why? Because body fluids are exchanged in the process of oral sex.
- Just because you have anal sex with someone doesn't mean you are reducing your risk of contracting the HIV virus. If the person is not wearing a latex condom, you can still contract the HIV virus.
